How We Built This

MOD historical data (1997–2009): All 13 annual UFO report PDFs were fetched from assets.publishing.service.gov.uk, released under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and held at The National Archives, Kew. The MOD UFO desk closed 1 December 2009.

Modern data (2020–2023): Regional and county figures taken verbatim from the appendix maps in each UFO Identified annual report by Ash Ellis (UFOIdentified.co.uk). Sources include MUFON, NUFORC, BUFOG, SUFON, CUFORG, NIUFOS and over 50 annual Freedom of Information requests to UK police forces and government bodies.

Clear sky nights: Estimated from Met Office 30-year climate averages (1991–2020) using annual sunshine hours per region as a proxy for clear evening conditions.

Fire Pit Score: A composite index combining sighting history (60% weight) and estimated clear nights per year (40% weight), normalised across all 12 UK regions. A higher score means a better combination of UFO activity and good stargazing conditions.

Rate of Sightings: A formula developed by UFO Identified calculating reported sightings per 250,000 population — a more accurate representation of where you are likely to see something than raw totals alone.

Note on the data: There is a 10-year gap between 2010 and 2019 where no single authoritative source recorded UK sightings. The Ministry of Defence UFO desk closed in December 2009. The modern civilian database begins in 2020. This gap is acknowledged and not estimated.
